Student Dress Code

The philosophy of our dress code at SCS.

The SCS dress code is intended to assist in the creation of a positive culture in our school. By creating a simple and easy to follow dress code, we can minimize the differences between students, promote a good attitude toward learning and focus the student’s attention on schoolwork, not what they are wearing. In addition, the uniform provides a visible identity in our community – if you see a student in khakis and polo you know they are from the charter school. This makes them more accountable and provides a sense of identity. We ask parents to actively support the dress code so that staff and faculty at the school do not have to spend an excessive amount of time enforcing it. In order to make it easier to obtain uniform clothing, we have set up a web based store where you can order approved clothing. Please go to the Sandpoint Charter School web site to access the Store (see below for more store details).

Anything that creates a disturbance or interferes with the educational environment or is a safety hazard is not appropriate. This includes clothing, jewelry, accessories, hair style, footwear, and body adornments.

Acceptable Clothing: must fit properly- not tight or baggy.

Sleeveless tops, spaghetti straps, tank tops, low openings and visible undergarments are not acceptable.

POLO SHIRTS: Short and long sleeve collared knit polo shirts of any solid color are acceptable as long as they have no more than 3 buttons. There can be no logos, pockets, patterns or labels on them. They must fit appropriately: no longer than the top of the pants pocket or 6" below the waist of the pants. Anything longer must be tucked in. Conversely, students must be able to raise both arms above their head and not expose their midriff. T-shirts may only be visible at the neck and must be white.

OXFORD SHIRTS: French blue or white oxford button-down shirt are allowed. These shirts must be tucked in at all times. A belt is recommended.

KHAKI PANTS: Light colored khaki or navy blue pants must reach the top of the shoe, fit properly - no oversized or super-baggy pants - and have no external cargo pockets on the sides i.e. cargo, painter pockets, or zippers and snaps. No denim or corduroy. Stitching on the pants must be the same color as the pant. The polo shirt must cover the midriff fully. Ladies may wear Capri pants in khaki or navy blue.

SHORTS: Khaki shorts should fit properly - not tight fitting or baggy. They may not fall below the knee or be shorter than one hand width above the knee. The shorts may not have external cargo or painter pockets and the stitching must be the same color as the short. No denim or corduroy.

SKIRTS/SKORTS: Girls may wear khaki skirts using the same length guidelines as the shorts.

FLEECE VESTS/JACKETS: The Sandpoint Charter School logo will be the only allowable logo. This logo appears on vests and jackets we order in the fall and spring. Students will be able to wear their vest or jackets as a layering piece inside the school.

Other Dress Code Requirements

  • No exposed undergarments including t-shirts.
  • Activity appropriate footwear is necessary for safety reasons. No flip-flops or slippers! Socks must be worn with all footwear (this includes sandals).
  • No visible tattoos.
  • Body piercing is limited to ears only.
  • Sunglasses, hats, visors, or bandannas may not be worn inside the school building.
  • Hair must be kept out of your eyes.
  • Hair color must be a color that occurs naturally as a hair color.
  • Spike or studded jewelry is not permitted for safety reasons.
  • Dress code is required while on school property or at school events. Wear your dress code proudly in the community!

The principal will make the final decision on admissibility of clothing. Any grievances concerning the dress code should be submitted in writing to the principal. If there is any doubt, ask first and then wear. If clothing is deemed inappropriate, parents will be called to bring in alternative clothing or the student must change into school owned clothing for the day (if available and appropriate).
