What is a Charter School?

A charter school is a public school authorized by Title 33 of the Idaho Code. It is a nonprofit, publicly funded and nonsectarian entity. It operates independently of the existing public school system, governed by it’s own board, the conditions of its charter and all federal laws and Idaho Code. In a charter school, each student, parent, and teacher chooses to be a part of the school. Charter schools are often founded on a specific educational philosophy.

Is tuition required?

There is no tuition required for admission to this school of choice.

What is Sandpoint Charter School’s educational philosophy and approach?

We are focused on providing an academically rigorous, project based education for middle school students in grades 6, 7th and 8th. When we say project based, this means that students work on projects that integrate different subject areas and provide meaningful, relevant opportunities for students to explore content in different ways. Examples of these projects are Night of the Notables, This I Believe Essays or the Hydrogen Fuel Cells project. We also believe that middle school students need a caring, positive, disciplined approach to assist them in learning appropriate learning behavior. We emphasize a positive school culture through our advocacy program and by holding students accountable for their behavior.

What is Advocacy?

Advocacy classes meet every day with a group of 15 students and a teacher. These classes teach communication and organization skills, appropriate behavior and personal responsibility. This is an opportunity for teachers and students to get to know each other and nurture a positive mentor relationship. This class is also used for reading time, checking on homework and the planner. The advocacy teacher serves as the primary communicator between the school and parents for their students.

Are uniforms required?

Sandpoint Charter school students are required to wear uniforms. Our desire is not to quash students’ individuality, but to secure their commitment to an educational community. By following a simple dress code we minimize the differences between students, promote a good attitude toward learning and focus the student’s attention on schoolwork and character development, not on what they are wearing.

Is Transportation available?

Sandpoint Charter School contracts with the local school district to provide busing to and from school. Your child will be riding with students from other schools.

What is the expectation of students who may be struggling academically at their previous school?

Sandpoint Charter School expects a high work ethic from all of our students and expects that by making the choice to be here that they will come to school prepared and motivated to learn.

What is the expectation of students who might have discipline issues or problems with authority?

If a student has these kinds of issues in other schools, it is unlikely that a change of scene will solve these problems. In some cases, it may make the situation worse since students in our school are highly visible and will be in constant contact with adults. Sandpoint Charter School does not tolerate misbehavior.

What makes Sandpoint Charter School different from other public schools?

The single biggest difference is our focus on providing an academically rigorous, project based education for middle school students.

Our teachers are dedicated, idealistic and passionate professionals who make a choice to work at this kind of school. They work hard and take a personal interest in each of their students. This genuine personal investment often results in success for the students.

Our school uniform is another difference that contributes to school safety by eliminating clothing as a distinguishing characteristic of a clique or a gang.

Our school code of conduct emphasizes the twin pillars of respect and responsibility.

We offer a block schedule to prepare students for high school as well as allow more time for deeper explorations of academic content.

We offer 6 different levels of math depending on ability level, not age grouping. Math classes also meet every day so students are exposed to math concepts more often.
